Rhiwbina Village is to be one of 27 new Cardiff stations added to the popular bike-sharing scheme Nextbike, writes Alys Jones.
The scheme allows users to rent a bike at a station and ride it to another after registering online or through an app, using a pay-as-you-go system.
Rhiwbina may be the ideal location for Nextbike. Earlier this year the Rhiwbina Against Plastic campaign aimed for the village to become first single-use plastic-free community in Cardiff, leading to local businesses going plastic straw-free.
This commitment to the environment is in line with Nextbike’s aim to reduce congestion. Cardiff City Council has even encouraged employers to offer Nextbike memberships to their employees to improve the city’s air quality, as well as contributing to Cardiff becoming an active, healthy city.
The addition of new stations more than doubles the current amount in Cardiff, which has struggled to keep up demand in the past. Nextbike offers three types of memberships: for casual users there is no monthly fee, each 30 minutes costs £1 with a £10 maximum charge for the day. Monthly and annual memberships cut this price in half and offer the first 30 minutes for free.
With a new Nextbike station and local sportsman Geraint Thomas’ recent Tour De France Win, perhaps cycling will take Rhiwbina by storm!
