The editor of the Rhiwbina-based Welsh Football magazine has called for the the sport's authorities to act following a spate of incidents in grassroots football in Cardiff.
In the New Year 2025 issue, editor Dave Collins cites incidents of violence and threats towards officials and players in several local league and cup fixtures in late 2024 and believes routine dissent from managers and coaches has created a hostile environment for officials.
Dave writes “the FAW [Football Association of Wales] and others run well-intentioned and widespread campaigns promoting 'Respect': clubs pledge support but this so often feels like empty words. For when match-day comes, the dissent continues unchecked”.
The article goes on to call for zero tolerance and more effective punishments on clubs and individuals for dissent and abuse. You can read the full article in Welsh Football issue 258 (New Year 2025), which is on sale now.
Run by unpaid enthusiasts under Dave's editorship in a home office in Thornhill Road, the magazine has now been published continuously since 1992 and has developed into a professional quality product, appearing eight times each season.
