Rhiwbina and Whitchurch among areas hit by burglaries and car thefts

Rhiwbina and Whitchurch are among the areas where car keys and cars have been stolen because people have left their doors unlocked in the evening, South Wales Police has reported.

"We are investigating numerous burglaries that have taken place in Cardiff and Penarth recently, where car keys and cars have been stolen," police said in a news statement.

Homes in Cardiff Bay, Penarth, Penylan, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Llanedeyrn have been targeted, and police believe the same individual or individuals are responsible.

They are gaining quick entry through unlocked doors during the evening and night-time and making off with valuables, car keys and then the owner’s car.

Residents are being advised to make sure doors are locked and that they keep car keys out of sight.

Makes of cars that have been stolen include Mazda MX5, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Volkswagen.

Detective Inspector Phil Marchant, from South Wales Police, said:  “An investigation is ongoing to identify and locate those responsible for these recent burglaries, but in the meantime, I’d like to stress to residents just how important it is that their belongings, particularly car keys, are stored safely – even while in their own home.”
