A North Cardiff primary school has been commended in its latest inspection by Estyn, the education and training inspectorate for Wales, as a thriving, caring, and inclusive community that fosters a love of learning and mutual respect among its pupils.

The report on Ysgol Gynradd Creigiau Primary School highlights the school's strong leadership, excellent behaviour standards, and innovative teaching approaches that enable most pupils to make sound progress in literacy, numeracy, and digital competence skills.

The school's dual-language provision, in both English and Welsh, is supported by a dedicated team of teachers and assistants who collaboratively deliver an engaging and comprehensive curriculum.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Outstanding behaviour: Pupils are noted for their exemplary behaviour, which stems from the school's high expectations and emphasis on mutual respect.

  • Inclusive community: Teachers effectively teach about diversity and inclusion, helping pupils appreciate differences and develop empathy for others.

  • Leadership excellence: The headteacher and leadership team are praised for their effective management and clear vision for continuous improvement.

  • Opportunities for pupil development: The school provides numerous leadership and decision-making opportunities for pupils, fostering confidence and a sense of responsibility, especially through initiatives where older pupils support younger peers.

Governors were also highlighted for their active involvement, regularly engaging with staff and pupils to ensure robust oversight and resource management.

Headteacher, Delyth Kirkman, said: "I am especially proud that the inspection team highlighted our inclusive, caring, nurturing and supportive ethos as well as the strong relationship between school staff and pupils.

"We are extremely proud that our pupils have been commended for their positive attitudes to learning, their perseverance and independence.

"This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication and continued commitment of our pupils, staff, families and governors."

The inspection found no specific areas for improvement and encouraged the school to continue its positive trajectory.

At the time of inspection, Ysgol Gynradd Creigiau Primary School had 367 pupils on roll. 6.8% of them eligible for free school meals, 2.9% identified with additional learning needs and 16.1% of pupils speak Welsh at home.
