A unique piece of World War 2 Dambusters memorabilia with a North Cardiff connection has sold at auction for three to four times its estimate.
The RAF cloth wings of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who led 617 Squadron in the famous Dambusters 'bouncing bomb' raid in 1943, were sold by Gildings Auctioneers in Market Harborough last week (7 January) for £4,200.
Gibson became one of the most famous figures of the war - he won the Victoria Cross and was later portrayed in the 1955 film The Dam Busters.
He had given the cloth wings to his cousin Janet de Gaynesford in Llanishen, and she donated them in 1994 to the Dambusters collection owned by Coventry-based press photographer Derrick Warren, who died in 2022.
The lot included a framed photo of Gibson and a handwritten letter by his cousin, stating that he had given her the wings at her parents' home in Llanishen in March 1941.
Going into the auction with an estimate of £1,000 to £1,500, the lot sold for £4,200.
In all, the collection raised a total of £24,000, Warwickshire World reported, compared with an estimated value of £8,000 to £10,000.
