There will be no train service to or from our local railways stations for the next two weeks from today (Monday 7 October).
The Coryton Line, which serves Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, Birchgrove, Coryton, Ty Glas, and Heath Low Level stations, has been closed "In preparation for the electrification of the line and to enhance the efficiency of planned infrastructure work," Transport for Wales says in a news article on its website.
TfW adds: "This temporary closure will enable teams to focus the majority of our remaining electrification work during this two-week period. This will also enable infrastructure teams to work during the day, reducing the impact on our lineside neighbours who may have been affected by increased night time work".
There will also be further line closures in late October and into November.
While the line is closed, you can use your train ticket to travel by Cardiff Bus between the city centre and Coryton.
TfW aims to electrify the line early next month (November) as part of the South Wales Metro programme, with new trains on the Coryton line from spring 2025.
🚆We reported earlier this year that Rhiwbina and other stations on the Coryton Line will get no extra trains as a result of the new South Wales Metro system - a situation described by the expert behind the concept as a "woeful underprovision".
Professor Mark Barry said two trains per hour meant people were expected to wait up to 30 minutes for a 15-minute ride into the city.
He added: "The current poor patronage on the City and Coryton lines is as a direct result of the poor service frequency. There really is little or no point operating a 2tph [trains per hour] rail service in Cardiff if one is serious about mode shift and operational/financial efficiency".
