Local gym goes online – and reaches California

A local independent gym, forced to move online due to the coronavirus outbreak, has expanded its horizons to attract clients as far away as California.

Shapewell Fitness, run by experienced personal trainer Cath Jenkins, normally operates in its private gym at Fielding House in Thornbury Close; but, like many businesses, has had to close its premises during the pandemic.

Cath has switched to running personal sessions from her home to clients in their homes, using apps like FaceTime and Zoom.

“Some clients have fitness equipment at home,” said Cath. “But even if they don’t, it doesn’t matter – I’m creating specific sessions for each client to give them the exercise they need with or without equipment.

“It’s working really well so far, and the technology means it needn’t be just for local people.”

Cath has already run sessions for her cousin in California, and her cousin’s friends in the US are also keen to sign up.

“The technology means clients can be anywhere – even thousands of miles away! Most are local, though, and there’s room for more.”

Shapewell charges £20 for a personal one-to-one 30-minute session or £30 for an hour.

There’s also a Facebook group for £20 a month to follow live videos, plus recipes and exercise tips.
