A stage show of the classic ‘80s hit film, Fame, comes to Cardiff’s New Theatre as part of its 30th anniversary tour, writes Alys Jones.
The show features the Oscar-winning title song, a cast of outstanding dancers, singers, musicians and rappers along with well-known TV stars in leading roles. The story follows the lives of students at New York’s High School For The Performing Arts as they navigate their way through the highs and lows, in a bittersweet but uplifting production.
Taking the lead role of Nick Piazza is Keith Jack, best known as a runner-up on BBC1’s Any Dream Will Do. Keith has appeared in theatre productions including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Only The Brave, Sincerely Mr Toad, HMS Pinafore and Forever Plaid. He has appeared in many concerts including performing for HM The Queen at the Parliament Picnic, John Barrowman’s album tour and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Birthday Concert.
Mica Paris plays Miss Sherman, a well-known face on television, as well as a respected singer with top 10 hit singles and albums spanning her 30-year career. Mica’s stage credits include Mama I Want To Sing, Sweet Lorraine in the West End and Love Me Tender. Mica said: “The movie Fame was a big favourite of mine because it really was the first glimpse of what the beginning process of becoming trained artist entailed – I’m so happy to be in the musical!”
Former soap star Jorgie Porter joins the cast as Iris Kelly. She was nominated for Best Serial Drama Performance at the National Television Awards and Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards for her role as Theresa McQueen. She is also well-known for taking part in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and Dancing on Ice. Jorgie said: “I am so excited to be making my stage debut playing Iris Kelly in Fame. The musical is one of my favourite ever films… I’ve not had a chance to perform ballet for a long time, it’s what I originally trained in – so I’m looking forward to getting my ballet shoes on!”
Fame – The Musical plays at Cardiff’s New Theatre from 24 – 29 September and tickets are available from the Box Office on (029) 2087 8889 and here.
