CHRISTMAS IN RHIWBINA: A SUMMARY OF FESTIVE EVENTS

Christmas is going to be different this year for everyone, writes Sophie Platt. With the latest Covid-19 Christmas announcement from the government, it is beginning to look like a like a strange Christmas.

The Rhiwbina Events team have taken it upon themselves to spread the Christmas cheer around Rhiwbina by putting on Christmas events throughout December.

Running from Tuesday 1st December to Sunday 13th December is the ‘Best Dressed Christmas Shop Window’. Businesses around Rhiwbina are invited to put up the poster and decorate their window in a festive way. Residents of Rhiwbina are then invited to vote for their favourites either via Facebook or by picking up a voting slip from Tenovus.

On Saturday 5th December, Father Christmas will be taking a tour of Rhiwbina and Pantmawr. Sadly, he will be unable to visit every street in Rhiwbina, so some people may need to walk to a street he is visiting.

Whether you are waving to Father Christmas from your garden or the street, make sure you wrap up warm. For those who are venturing onto the streets to see Father Christmas, make sure you adhere to social distancing rules to keep yourselves and others safe. Rudolph has finished planning his route and it is up on the Santa Tour events page. Check what time he will be visiting your street by clicking here. The tour starts at 4:30pm and finishes at 8:00pm.

As well as the Santa Tour, there will also be a Virtual Christmas Light switch-on at 5:00pm on Saturday 5th December. This will take place on Facebook Live so you can watch from the comfort of your own home. Please do not arrive or congregate at this event as it may cause the event to be delayed or even cancelled. Respect the Covid restrictions and enjoy this event virtually.

From Saturday 5th December, there will be a Christmas ‘Treecycle’ Walk. The idea is to use only natural and recyclable material to create a Christmas tree to display in front of your home for everyone to enjoy while they are out walking. Please only use natural materials from your garden, not wild, and also do not use glitter, tinsel or any other material that may be harmful to nature.

There is a ‘Fun Seasonal Quiz’ from Thursday 10th December to Thursday 17th December. Collect a question sheet from outside the Olive Branch or Tenovus and then visit different village shops to find clues.

On Saturday 12th December from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, there will be personalised Zoom calls with Father Christmas himself. All money raised will go to ‘Holibobs’ Children’s Cancer Charity.

And finally, on Sunday 20th December at 5:30pm, Niall Allen from Only Men Aloud will be performing Christmas Carols live on Facebook Live.

A full schedule is detailed below.

These plans may change if Government Coronavirus rules change.

For more information, visit the Rhiwbina Events Team Facebook Page and view all the events they have for updates.

Merry Christmas!
