REVIEW: Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical at The New Theatre
The iconic show Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical is visiting Cardiff this week, and we were kindly invited to review last night's (Monday 3 February) opening night, which was sensational!
Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical features music by Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf. It is a hugely successful show worldwide, winning awards such as the Evening Standard Award for Best New Musical in the West End.
This story has a Romeo and Juliet feel to it, following the life of Strat (played by Glenn Adamson), the leader of the Lost, who falls in love with Raven (Katie Conkinson) who is from a different life to him.
Raven is the daughter of Sloane (Sharon Sexton) and Falco (Rob Fowler), the ruler of the city above the tunnels. Strat and Raven are immediately drawn to each other, and it’s love at first sight. But, like Romeo and Juliet, their love is forbidden by Raven’s father, who vows to stop the relationship and ruin Strat and the rest of the members of the Lost.
The cast also features Georgia Bradshaw as Zahara, Ryan Carter as Jagwire, Carla Bertran as Tink, Luke Street as Ledoux, Carly Burns as Valkyrie, and many other talented performers.
One of the aspects I enjoyed most about Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical, is the forbidden love it portrayed between Strat and Raven, and their whirlwind romance. But it also showed the love between Sloane and Falco, and how it changes as time goes on. And then there are the various relationships within the gang of The Lost - representated in a somewhat fairytale manner, yet totally believable.
You can’t watch Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical and not talk about the music. It was outstanding. If you’re a fan of Meat Loaf, then it’s a must-see for this reason alone. The whole cast did a phenomenal job of recreating these iconic songs and showed massive talent. In a show like this, the band can sometimes be overlooked, but they were incredibly impressive and nailed every song.
My favourite song in the production was Paradise by the Dashboard Light - it was brilliant. The choreography and acting was so fun and incredibly fitting with the song. It really played a big part in the story of Falco and Sloane, as well as the overall plot. Fowler and Sexton were fantastic throughout!
This musical, if you didn’t guess by the title, is based on the album Bat Out Of Hell (1977) by Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf. It became one of the best selling albums in history, selling over 68 million copies all over the world. 16 years later, the pair did it again and released Bat Out Of Hell II: Back into Hell which contains the classic, I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t So That). Then again, 13 years later they released the final album in the series, Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, completing the iconic trilogy.
Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical is a fun and fantastic night out, whether you're a Meat Loaf fan or not. I can guarantee that you’ll want to get up and dancing regardless of whether or not you know the song (and chances are you will!).
Bat Out Of Hell - The Musical is in the New Theatre until Saturday 8 February. To get your ticket for this brilliant performance, you can ring 0343 310 0041 or by click here.
